Sitting with my family during Eid today, watching my 6-month-old son laugh at absolutely nothing – just pure joy – and seeing my entire family light up watching him, I had one of those moments that hits you right in the chest.
For the past 5 years, I’ve been so focused on building Uptech that I forgot WHY I was building it.
I told myself I was doing it for my family’s future. To give them a better life. To make them proud. But somewhere along the way, I started treating “family time” like a luxury I couldn’t afford.
Remember that story I shared about working upstairs during my sister’s wedding while everyone celebrated downstairs? That wasn’t just one day – that was my life. Always “busy,” always “building something important,” always promising “just five more minutes.”
That’s when it hit me.
What’s the point of building a successful company if the people you’re building it FOR don’t even feel like they have you in their lives?
I’ve been so obsessed with providing for my family financially that I forgot they need me present, not just presenting them with money.
Here’s what I learned today that every entrepreneur needs to hear:
Here’s what I learned today that every entrepreneur needs to hear:
1. Your family needs your attention more than your money
Most of us think providing financially = being a good family member. Wrong. Your presence is the real gift.
2. “Just 5 more minutes” becomes 5 more years
Every time you say “let me finish this,” you’re training your family that work comes first. They stop expecting you to be fully there.
3. Your biggest regrets won’t be about missed opportunities
They’ll be about missed family moments. That client can wait. Your child’s laugh at that exact moment? It won’t happen again.
4. Success feels empty when celebrated alone
What’s the point of achieving everything if you don’t have meaningful relationships to share it with?
5. Your family won’t wait for your “success” to start living
Their lives are happening right now. Miss it, and it’s gone forever.
So here’s my commitment going forward:
Sundays are completely work-free (no “just checking messages”)
Family events get priority over client meetings
My phone stays in another room during family meals
Success means nothing if I’m celebrating it alone
To my fellow entrepreneurs grinding away: Take a step back today. Look at the people around you. Ask yourself – are you building your business for them, or despite them?
Your company might not remember you missed that one client call. But your family will remember you missed their special moments.
Sometimes the most important work you can do is to stop working.
Eid Mubarak to everyone! May this blessed day remind us all what truly matters ❤️
